The Artist

exceeDANCE
It knocks on the door depriving me of sleep, creating anguish.
At the very moment I allow myself to let the impulse flow and surrender to my essence, I pour all my sensitiveness through force, sculpting; overcoming the rigidity of material, or caressing clay, creating harmonic and winding shapes. I watch the turn of rough into elegance.
Through sport I got to know my body. I tested it in several modalities, exhaustive training, always seeking to overcome my own limits.
Flexibility, asanas, torsions.
Body taken to another level.
Surpassing and suffering.
Intoxicating adrenalin and endorphin.
Lesions.
The excess.
Learning in the flesh.
But art didn’t silence. It kept pulsating inside me asking for liberation.
That was when I realized I couldn’t keep silent.
Words materialized through the hands. Intense action abstracting my thoughts into shapes.
My visions and restlessness into something tangible, visible, real.
My sincere essence comes up.
Subtleness from the soul that reveals itself; in bodies sometimes defined, or just suggested.
Shapes that express tension, the drama of existence and the quest for balance.
Followed by the moment of relief and gratitude.
The qualification in fine arts revealed itself as the unfailing choice.
Feeling of magnanimity took over me.
With faith in God, I follow my Truth.
Paula Delmanto
Quest for the essencePaula Delmanto’s sculptures have delicacy as a unique element. When she devotes, for example, to the human form, there is lightness and grace in the manner of dealing with the forms, which follow a complex path of lines and points to the dynamism not only of matter, but of living itself.
Human beings can appear in poses or singular positions, in a curious combination between the effort to exist and an acceptance of acridity and affliction. That doesn’t mean resignation or melancholy, but poetics characterized by the effort to survive as a primordial element.
There is a certain irony, at times, in this search for a distinct or unusual look. The language used does not abandon the masters and also does not reject them. They’re there as a starting point for the construction of personal poetics, in which the simplest solutions would hinder the pleasure of challenge.
Certain contortions of the bodies and surroundings with the abstraction are natural results of the walk in search of the essence. It’s in the fragmentation and deformation that interpretative liberties get consistence to build an own personal universe, ruled by the conviction that experimenting is the way to reach continuous refinement.
Oscar D’Ambrosio is a master in Fine Arts by the Unesp Art Institute and doctor at the Education, Art and Culture History Program of the Mackenzie Presbyterian University, (2013).
